Things to Do in Austin
It's the most wonderful time of the year, which means there are plenty of fun and exciting Christmas things to do in Austin. If you're looking for something that you can do in the city this holiday season, look no further. There is truly something for everyone.
The Austin Trail of Lights is a family favorite. It's one of the annual things to do for Christmas in Austin that you just can't miss. Open December 8 through 23, this is the event's 58th year. Located at Zilker Park, the trail features over 2 million lights and 70 Christmas displays, along with 90 holiday trees. It's been named one of the top 10 lights displays in the country.
Ice skating and Austin don't usually go hand-in-hand, but from November 19 until January 8, you can do just that daily at the Four Seasons Hotel's Ice Rodeo. Ice skate under the stars, make s'mores, gather around the fire pit to get warm, or just enjoy a cozy evening in one of the most beautiful places in the city.
If you prefer to stay inside, head to the Long Center on December 3 through December 23 to check out The Nutcracker offered by Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony Orchestra. It's the 60th anniversary of the ballet's performance of this Christmas classic.
Another great family-friendly option is a performance of the classic A Christmas Carol at the ZACH Theatre. It runs from November 16 to December 31.
Santa's Ranch in nearby New Braunfels is one of the most exciting Christmas light displays in Texas. Enjoy hot chocolate and kettle corn as you drive through over a mile of light-filled country roads and create a night of family memories. Santa's Ranch is open from November 11 until January 1.
Another exciting lights display and one of the newer things to do in Austin during Christmas is the Peppermint Parkway lights display at the Circuit of the Americas Race Track. Open November 25 through December 30th, you'll enjoy a mile of light displays, dancing characters, food, rides, and other activities.
The annual Armadillo Christmas Bazaar takes place from December 17 until December 23 at the Palmer Events Center. Go shop for cool Christmas gifts, enjoy live music, check out the work of nationally-recognized artists, and just enjoy the fun-filled atmosphere.
If you have kids, head to the Thinkery any weekend in December and practice your art and engineering skills by making a gingerbread house. You'll need to purchase your gingerbread kit in advance and reserve your spot at Thinkery's Candy Wonderland.
For a magical night everyone in the family can enjoy, check out one of Austin’s most popular festive events, the Light Show at Mozart’s Coffee Roasters. There are four ways to immerse yourself in the lights. You can book full service Table Reservations, view the lights from the Bavarian Marketplace, board a boat for a Nautical Light Show, or dance the night away at the Silent Disco. The annual show takes place nightly from November 10 until January 6.
Ring in 2023 with the annual Austin's New Year event at Auditorium Shores. On December 31, 2022, from 6 p.m. to midnight, you can enjoy live music performances, delicious meals and snacks from local food trucks, and a midnight fireworks show that promises to be spectacular.
